About Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 – April 27, 1882), who went by his middle name Waldo, was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society.

Emerson’s religious views were often considered radical at the time. He believed that all things are connected to God and, therefore, all things are divine. His views, the basis of Transcendentalism, suggested that God does not have to reveal the truth but that the truth could be intuitively experienced directly from nature. When asked his religious belief, Emerson stated, “I am more of a Quaker than anything else. I believe in the ‘still, small voice,’ and that voice is Christ within us.”

Emerson was a supporter of the spread of community libraries in the 19th century, having this to say of them: “Consider what you have in the smallest chosen library. A company of the wisest and wittiest men that could be picked out of all civil countries, in a thousand years, have set in best order the results of their learning and wisdom.”

He remains among the linchpins of the American romantic movement, and his work has greatly influenced the thinkers, writers, and poets that followed him. “In all my lectures,” he wrote, “I have taught one doctrine, namely, the infinitude of the private man.
Emerson’s work not only influenced his contemporaries, such as Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau, but would continue to influence thinkers and writers in the United States and around the world down to the present.

My thoughts on these quotes

Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quotes are deep and wise, and I’ve always liked him very much. Some time ago I made a video with my 50 favorite quotes from him, you can watch it on the attached link below.
This week is my favorite “The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions.” Every idea that hardens us enriches us, some ideas stimulate new ideas, some ideas pass into realization, and we are never the same again because our mind has expanded.
Again, I was choosing between many quotes, so I added 10 more to the post.

These are my thoughts on quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson. I will be happy if you share with me how you experience these quotes, which one is your favorite if you know one that is not in this post. I look forward to your comments.

I love positive spiritual websites. I love Ralph Waldo Emerson quotes along with  Napolean Hill quotes. The mind is truly a magnificent thing. So the more I fill it with positive things, the more my life will bear its fruit.  I was just wondering, is Ralph Waldo Emerson the only person you quote, or are there others? I love your section on positive books – a review of the best selling ones about positive thinking. I have been a fan of Norman Vincent Peale since I was a teenager.  I’m not surprised it’s still a favorite!

    Hi, Nina,

Thank you for this compilation of great quotes by Waldo Emerson. These are all great, and I especially like “The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions”.

It’s known that we, humans, utilize only a small percentage of our brain capacity, so this quote is a great reminder that we are the ones who are able to develop the way we think act, love, behave, learn.

Thank you for sharing today, I’ll bookmark your website for future references.

    Have a wonderful week!

    Timely article Nina,

I’m in need of some positive quotes to help me get through these tough times and Ralph Waldo definitely has a thing about lifting spirits. The mind once set by a new idea never returns, so completely true, I’ve been overloading with growth ideas and I thought it’s weird that it’s affecting me differently, great to know I’m on the right path 😀

Thank you for sharing these quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson. I had to look up Quaker beliefs, and love his idea that everyone is an individual. Yes, that must have been radical thinking in the 1800s. I think my favourite quote must be “what lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us” I think many underestimate the power that lies within.

These quotes are absolutely amazing, I just kept reading on, each one better than the last, I can’t believe I hadn’t come across them before! I loved ‘ the mind once stretched by an idea, never returns to its original dimensions.’ I’ve actually written a lot of these down, as I have a quote notebook for quotes I love. This was really inspiring, I spend a lot of time looking at quotes as I believe in the tremendous power of words to shape us and change how we perceive things. Thanks for a great read :D.

Thanks for the kind comment. Yes, quotes are really powerful, great wisdom in a sentence or two, and when we read them, they remain in our consciousness or subconscious.
